This summer I was told by some people that they were surprised to learn that I was a “white” guy and not a light skinned black dude. That got me thinking. It is all a matter of shade. In the summer I could be mistaken as African American and in the winter I am obviously a pasty white guy. I am still the same person.

At what point does your skin's shade denote you as “white” or “black?” These simple differences in shade are what separate us? How trivial it all seems when put into that perspective. No two people are the same color. My brothers and I are all different shades. We are all different and yet for some reason society deems it necessary to put one another in these blocks.

The real difference between us all are monetary. The people with power and money control the poor in the world, yet, despite this, we waste our time quarreling amongst ourselves over something as ridiculous as the shade of our skin. This separation of society further empowers those in power to keep us down. We are too busy fighting with each other to realize that we, no matter what color your skin may be, are being oppressed from those in power. Society makes us fear one another to keep us from uniting for a common good for us all.

It will be an amazing day when we put away these asinine notions that our pigment differentiates us. These lines of separation are so pliable that something as simple as a suntan can dissolve thousands of years of ignorance. So next time remember, everyone is different, that is what makes us all the same. Peace and Love.
